How to Prepare for the dMAT Exam

Preparing for an exam with no syllabus feels wrong to anyone trained on Indian competitive exams. There is no chapter list, no formula sheet, no previous years' papers to solve. That absence is not a gap in the information — it is the nature of the test. The dMAT measures reasoning speed on fixed task formats, and the only thing that improves it is repeated timed exposure to those formats.

Here is what that looks like in practice.

The four rules that follow from the format

1. Learn the task instructions before test day

The detailed rules for each task type live in the official preparatory materials. In the exam itself you see only short reminders. If the first time you read the Figure Sequences movement rules is on 26 September, you will spend minutes decoding instructions that better-prepared candidates already know by heart — on a test that gives you 75 seconds an item.

2. Practise without a pen

You may not take notes at any point in the dMAT. This is the rule most students ignore during preparation and it is the most expensive one to ignore. If you solve equation systems with written working for three weeks, you have trained a skill the exam deletes. Do it in your head from day one, even though it is slower and more frustrating at first.

3. Drill to the clock

75 seconds per item is an unforgiving average. Timed sets of five items teach the single most valuable exam skill the format allows: recognising within twenty seconds whether an item is a solve-now or a guess-and-move. Most lost marks on the dMAT are not items candidates could not solve — they are items candidates solved too slowly, costing them two easier questions later.

4. Never leave a blank

No negative marking means a guess strictly dominates a blank. Eliminate what you can, pick, move on.

A four-week plan

Week 1 — Diagnose and learn the rules

  • Sit one full mock cold, before studying anything. You need a baseline, and the discomfort is instructive.
  • Read the complete Figure Sequences rule set until you can recite it: movement types, the x+1 acceleration, no overlap, bounce versus travel along the boundary.
  • Memorise the equation constraints: whole numbers 1 to 20, exactly one solution.
  • Review every wrong answer from the diagnostic mock with the worked solution.

Week 2 — Subtest by subtest, untimed then timed

  • Work one subtest per day, first untimed for accuracy, then timed.
  • Figure Sequences: practise the symbol-by-symbol method — fix one figure's rule across all four given matrices, eliminate contradicting options, move on.
  • Equations: practise the substitution order — most constrained equation first, into the equation with the most unknowns, reduce, back-substitute.
  • Latin Squares: practise holding one or two derived placements in working memory while scanning for the next forced cell.

Week 3 — Full mocks and pacing

  • Two full-length timed mocks this week, sat properly: no phone, no paper, no pausing.
  • After each, log your errors by type rather than by question. Rule not known, rule misapplied, or ran out of time — three different problems with three different fixes.
  • Begin revising your bachelor's fundamentals for the Subject Module, aimed at application rather than recall.

Week 4 — Simulation and taper

  • One final full mock as a dress rehearsal, at the same time of day as your real sitting.
  • Light drilling only in the last three days. Cramming does not raise reasoning speed and does raise anxiety.
  • Confirm your admit slip, test centre and passport well in advance.

Preparing for the Subject Module

Your best preparation here is structured revision of your bachelor's fundamentals — not new material. The tasks are knowledge-based but application-oriented: you read an input text and apply a concept, rather than reciting a definition.

Engineering applicants should revisit core problem-solving in their branch. Commerce and economics applicants should revise accounting logic, financial arithmetic and micro/macro basics. Business and management applicants should focus on business analysis and economics. In each case, practise using concepts on short cases rather than defining them.

What not to bother with

  • Generic IQ puzzle books. Superficially similar, but the dMAT's rules are specific — particularly the x+1 acceleration and the two boundary behaviours. Practising a different rule set builds wrong instincts.
  • Printed question papers. They cannot enforce the no-notes rule or per-subtest timing, which are the two constraints the exam is built around.
  • Anything promising leaked or official papers. The item bank is not public.

Three to four weeks of consistent, timed practice is enough for most candidates, because the test measures reasoning speed on fixed formats rather than content knowledge.

Can I prepare for the dMAT without coaching?

Yes. There is no curriculum requiring a teacher. What you need is the official task rules, timed practice under no-notes conditions, and worked solutions to learn from.

What is the hardest part of the dMAT?

Most candidates find Figure Sequences hardest, because the rule set is unfamiliar and harder items layer three or four figures each following an independent rule.
