Who Needs to Take the dMAT?

Updated 20 August 2026 · 6 min read · DMAT Club

Plenty of students spend time researching test centres and syllabus before checking whether the dMAT even applies to them. Do this check first — it takes two minutes.

The four conditions

The dMAT applies to you only if all four are true:

  1. You are applying for a Master's programme in Germany. Bachelor's applicants are unaffected.
  2. Your intake is Summer Semester 2027 or later. Winter 2026/27 applicants are unaffected.
  3. Your bachelor's degree is in engineering (including computer science and IT), commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management.
  4. You started your APS process on or after 29 June 2026.

The exemptions

  • You completed APS online registration or posted your documents before 29 June 2026. The cutoff is the submission date, not the certificate issue date — documents submitted on 27 June with a certificate issued in July still qualify for exemption.
  • You already hold an APS certificate.
  • You are a bachelor's or PhD applicant.
  • You are on a confirmed exchange, double-degree or university-partnership programme.
  • Your degree falls outside the affected fields — medicine, humanities, law and architecture are among those not covered.

The borderline cases

This is where students get caught. Some degrees sit ambiguously between an affected and an unaffected field, and the classification decides whether you need the exam at all. Reported examples include B.Sc. Statistics, B.Sc. Data Science, business analytics programmes and dual-major degrees. Separately, BCA, standalone computer science and B.Sc. Data Science degrees have been reported as exempt in some guidance — which is exactly why you should not rely on a blog post, including this one, for your own case.

Do this if you are borderline. Email APS India with your exact programme name as printed on your degree certificate and ask for written clarification before you register or pay anything. Do not assume based on subject overlap, and keep the reply.

Why it was introduced

The dMAT exists to give German universities a standardised, centrally evaluated comparison point across very different national education systems. Every candidate answers comparable material under identical conditions, evaluation happens centrally in Bochum with no local examiner discretion, and the format follows recognised standards for psychodiagnostic testing.

Given that around 60% of Indian students in Germany are in engineering-related fields and a further 21% in social sciences, economics and management, the affected group covers the large majority of the Indian applicant pool. It is not a niche rule.

What it does not do

Two reassurances that get lost in the anxiety. First, APS India has confirmed that a low dMAT score does not block your APS certificate. Second, admission decisions remain entirely at each university's discretion, and different programmes weigh the score differently. The dMAT is a data point in your application, not a gate you either pass or fail.

The score has lifetime validity, so you take it once.

If it does apply to you

Put it at the front of your timeline rather than the end. For affected applicants it comes before the APS certificate, and APS in turn feeds your university applications and your visa. Registration for the first sitting closes 15 September 2026 and no second sitting has been confirmed for this cycle.
